A benefits package includes all the perks you receive when you get a real job, things like bonuses, insurance to pay the doctors, or perhaps a company car. For the next several weeks, we’ll examine some spiritual benefits of being on God’s corporate team.
Psalm 103:1-5 (NIV):
“Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
Last week, we examined our life insurance: sin and the benefit of God’s forgiveness. Item two in David’s benefits package is health care: “and heals all your diseases, ”.
Stitches. Broken arms. Scrapes and cuts. Colds and flu. The One who created every cell can heal them when they get hurt. Sometimes God heals through a doctor’s care, sometimes through miracles, and sometimes with a brand new body in heaven.
God not only heals sick tummies and broken bones, He also heals broken spirits and sick hearts. Teasing, harsh words, or abuse leave injuries that no X-ray or MRI will detect, but nothing escapes God’s notice. Psalm 147:3 (NIV) says, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” He sees every hurt and He can heal these too.
God also heals the disease of sin. Psalm 41:4 (IV) says, “I said, ‘O LORD, have mercy on me; heal me, for I have sinned against you.’” He gives us a heart transplant and we receive His heart of perfect love in place of our diseased sinful one. As His Holy Spirit works in our life, sin’s presence shrinks and its influence lessens. Spiritual health is restored. Righteousness becomes normal.
Health care: it’s a great benefit.
