Spiritual PT

Physical Therapy. Pain with a purpose.

I’m Granny’s chauffeur to PT each week. She goes in happy. She comes out nearly cussing and swearing she’ll never go back. Enter dementia’s silver lining because Granny will forget it all before her next appointment.

Bottom line? She’s tired, sore, and sick of the process.

Darn it if God doesn’t have the same idea for spiritual training, and my spiritual muscles groan and complain too. After a workout of patience and understanding, I’m tired. Mentally and physically.

But PT, like other training, hurts with a purpose. First Timothy 4:8 NIV says, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

PT rebuilds. PT strengthens. PT moves us forward.

So what muscle group is God working today?

For me, it’s judgment. Raised in a performance environment, I learned to excel in order to gain acceptance. And even then, at times, it wasn’t enough. While the drive for perfection and excellence was good, it also cultivated pride and a tendency to analyze others.

And pass judgment based on the results.

I do it subconsciously. In a glance. Size up a person I don’t even know.

My workout? God is training me to observe only. No judging.

Observation leads me to merciful thoughts.

I wonder what they are struggling with.

It looks like they’ve had a rough day.

I’ve responded that way before too. Ouch!

So, are you sore? Tired? Ready to skip a workout? Hang tough. God has a purpose—to regain the range of motion we had before sin interfered.

Questions:

What workout is God putting you through?

Can you see His purpose?

What is sore?

What muscle is getting stronger?
