How to Get Better: Playing (and Praying) With the Big Dogs

Sports. Academics. Fine arts. Excellence rubs off.

If you want to get better at something, hang with those at a higher level. The big dogs.

And if you want spiritual growth, you hang with people who pray. Don’t get me wrong. I love our worship team and Bible study is near and dear to my heart. But I’m convinced the giants of the faith are found in the prayer room. Three lessons stand out in my time with them:

  • God is good. I heard testimony after testimony of His work in the lives of others. And my faith grew. Lots.
  • God cares. Often I would go to prayer time with a concern on my heart—and not say a word. Minutes later, someone would say, “Hey Gayle, you know that thing you’re concerned about, God says _________.” Seriously? You can’t hide with these people. God talks to them and He talked to me too.
  • God moves. I’ve seen God bring up a thought or need backed with specific Scripture. He leads His people to pray for what’s on His heart. No pre-meeting memo. One-by-one, each person was led to what was important to Him.

1 Thessalonians 2: 11-12 (NIV) says, “For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting, and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.”

So, who are the big dogs in your circle? Who are your spiritual fathers and mothers?

And who are the big dogs for your kids? Sunday school teachers? Adults in your Bible study? Small group leaders?

The biggest dog in their circle is you. Simply sharing a personal experience plants seeds of faith that will bloom in time.

In sports, kids play up when they need a greater challenge.

Try praying up. And watch your faith grow.

Questions:

How have others impacted your faith positively?

What things encourage you spiritually?

Are you willing to do the same for your kids?

Kids, are you bold enough to get the same thing going with your friends or youth group?
