Spiritual Gifts for Christmas

A stack of Christmas catalogs sits on my table. Torn pages. Dog-eared corners. I flip through them searching for “keepers,” as I shop for friends and family. Have you flipped through God’s catalog? He has one—and He gives like no other.

Romans, 1 Corinthians, and Ephesians catalog the gifts of the Spirit:

Apostleship                           Prophecy                    Evangelism

Pastor/Teacher                     Wisdom                       Knowledge

Faith                                       Healing                       Miracles

Helps/Service                        Administration          Encouragement

Giving                                     Leadership                 Mercy

Tongues                                  Interpretation of tongues

Ephesians 4:12-13 (NIV) says the Holy Spirit gives His spiritual gifts “to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

Preparation for God’s people.

Building up the body of Christ.

Unity.

Knowledge of God’s Son.

Maturity.

The fullness of Christ.

Hmmm. Beats a tie or a cashmere sweater any day. So I pray that God will gift my family spiritually. Jesus said, “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11 NIV) What He will give and how it will manifest, I may never see or know, but I ask in faith.

And while I’m praying, I do some spiritual gift shopping for myself. My request? I’ll tell you in next week’s post.

Questions:

What spiritual gifts do you desire for your children?

For yourself?

How has someone’s spiritual gift affected you?
