Spiritual Dementia: What Day Is It?

What day is it?

Ask Granny, and she won’t have a clue thanks to her dementia. Ask her about the past, however, and she recalls things with great clarity.

I want to do the same.

Remember the past, specifically, my past with God. I won’t let spiritual dementia rob my memory. I want to remember.

Remember past struggles, now spiritual habits that are second nature.

Remember past failures, now victories.

Remember past hurts, now healed.

Why? Because it anchors my today.

My husband and I faced some major challenges this year: loss of job, start of new job, pursuit of a master’s degree after twenty plus years at home. Yet we never lost God’s peace. That amazed me. I don’t know if I could have said the same thing several years ago.

I don’t journal often, but I try to get the big things down. Life changes, new insights, growth spurts. I want a record of spiritual markers, so on days when my faith is shaky, I’ll have reminders.

John 20:31(NIV) says, “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

Believe it. Record your spiritual markers and remember.

Questions:

What spiritually significant events do you remember?

When you reflect on them, how do you feel?

Parents, have you shared some of these with your kids?

Start a journal. Have your kids start one too.
