Prayer: Hurry Up and Wait

Silence.

Crickets.

Dead air.

When it comes to prayer, have you ever prayed and then—nothing?

I hate that.

I dread the battle that’s coming between flesh and spirit. My spirit is willing, but my flesh is not. My flesh wants to:

  • Run ahead of God.
  • Take the bull by the horns.
  • Say yes in spite of a full schedule.
  • Follow common sense, logic, and reason.
  • Do what looks good.

My spirit wants to:

  • Wait for a word from God.
  • Let the opportunity go if no word comes.
  • Be still.

So, who will win this tug of war? Flesh or spirit?

It’s a moment-by-moment battle, but here are some tips from prior contests due to unanswered prayer (at least at that moment):

  • God knows what’s ahead. I don’t have a clue.
  • Running ahead of God always gets me in trouble.
  • God doesn’t always make sense, but He does know what’s best.
  • Often, good must be released to make room for best.
  • An absence of peace means Stop!

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) reads, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

When a word hasn’t come, but the deadline has, let the presence—or absence—of His peace be the guide. It will stand guard over our hearts and our minds.

No worry.

No racing pulse.

No sleepless nights.

Simply peace.

Questions:

How’s your battle?

Who’s winning? Flesh? Or spirit?

How’s that working?
