No Zzz’s With Zechariah

“So he said to me, ‘This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.’” Zechariah 4:6 (NIV)

Put the novel down.

Let me suggest the book of the prophet Zechariah for your summer reading. The latest video has nothing on Zech’s book because it begins with eight—yes, count them—eight night visions. No prophet has written more about the Messiah except for Isaiah. And Isaiah takes sixty-six chapters to do it. Zech does it in fourteen. Zechariah gives a preview of Gospel attractions to come: Herod’s slaying of the infants, the triumphal entry, thirty pieces of silver, the potter’s field, and more. The book continues with apocalyptic and end time material so graphic your jaw will drop.

If you’ve ever thought the Old Testament has little value for today…

If you’ve put the Old Testament way down on your Read Through the Bible list…

If you’ve heard of a part of the Old Testament called the Prophets, but have never cracked it open…

Pick up your Bible, and flip to Zechariah.

It’s a real page-turner. (A study Bible or a good commentary like The Bible Knowledge Commentary will be helpful as you read.)

Gayle’s note: I believe the Prophets have much to say at this point in history and in light of world events. If, in fact, the end times are near, we need to be well-read on what Scripture says: signs to watch for, events that will occur. The Prophets give specifics for which God will hold the nations accountable. The Prophets also tell us why those specifics are important to God. As a bonus, we get a preview of end time events with a spin towards Israel. God has provided all we need. There are many good commentaries that explain His Word. Be prepared. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV) Especially, the Prophets.

Questions:

Have you ever explored the Prophets? Major or minor?

Does the Old Testament intimidate you?

Do you believe the Old Testament speaks to us today?
