Margin.

The empty border around the edges.

Breathing room. White space.

Something I’m lacking right now.

I scheduled myself to the edge—again. I rationalized it by telling myself it was temporary. Only a few weeks. Only a few semesters.

Right.

I find myself working from dark to dark. I watch my husband and kids cover jobs that used to be mine. I have to plan down time.

And the pressure is relentless.

I need to plan margin too. Put it back in my schedule. Because one thing about margins—they’re great for note taking.

Reflection.

Thoughts on this or that.

The little things.

Because real life is lived in the margin.

We touch one another here.

A different place from business-as-usual black font.

Margin is marked by colored ink, stickers, and stars. A place where something strikes our spirit.

Psalm 127:1-2 (NIV) says, “Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves.”

Margin, sleep, rest.

God grants these to those He loves. A life pushed to the edge may be in vain. What are you losing by sacrificing margin? For me, I lose perspective, relationships, and wellbeing.

And I want them back.

So, here’s to margin. The invisible boundary that guards my spirit from invasion by demands that really don’t have to be met.

Not today.

Not by me.

Margin.

Questions:

Are you overscheduled?

If so, why?

What are you missing?

What needs to go?

Family Application:

Go around the table and ask: If you could change the schedule, what would you add? What would you drop?

Have you been trading family time for extracurricular stuff?

Is God on the schedule?

Does everyone have breathing room?
