One hallmark of Trinity is the balance of unity and uniqueness. One expressed in Three.

So, who’s in charge?

Great question. Yes.

Yes?

Yes.

You mean, They take turns?

No. They are One. Father, Son, and Spirit agree in purpose. All Members are equal. No One has to be in charge because They agree. Who does what changes for different things at different times. Sometimes One leads, sometimes Another.

However, leading, in God’s view, looks very different from what we see in the world. God desires servant leadership because that’s how He leads. Check out Luke 22:24-27, “Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.’”

Why does this work for the Trinity? Because the Trinity operates under a team mentality. Let’s say the Trinity is playing soccer. They have the same goal: to score more than Their opponent. God the Father plays keeper, the Holy Spirit plays forward, and Jesus plays midfield. Who leads? The One with the ball controls play, but if His Teammate is open and calls for a pass, He passes.

Teamwork through unselfish leadership and willing teammates.

God desires this to be true of our relationships.

Marriage.

Family.

School.

Work.

Church.

Servant leaders and willing followers bring unity in purpose and harmony between people. We stub our toe on issues of submission and authority when we focus on our disagreements rather than the common goal.

What if your leader is less than servant-like or perhaps you disagree on the goal?

Pray—and keep praying. God is able to lead your leader, be they spouse or boss. At the very least, God will change you and help you manage a tough situation. Stay focused on what is positive (see last week’s post), and be open to all He will teach you.

Do not, however, buck God’s chain of command and expect Him to bless you. I’ve been here far too often. Trust me. It’s not a place you want to go. Respect that person’s headship because God has put them there. Your first allegiance is to Him. God is sovereign. You can trust Him even when you have trouble trusting your leader.
