Cross Training: Here’s your workout for Tuesday.

Don’t you just love it when Mom or Dad tell you to do something? Not. We don’t like to be told what to do. Do you find yourself thinking that you can’t wait until you are on your own and no one can tell you what to do? Check this out.

King Solomon, the wisest man ever, wrote these words to his son:

“Listen my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.”  Proverbs 1: 7b, 8 (NIV)

Did you notice that all those do’s and don’ts you get from Mom and Dad are not like ropes or handcuffs that keep you from freedom?  Instead, King Solomon compares those rules and instructions to a chain to adorn your neck, (Girls, think accessories.) and a garland to grace your head (Guys, this is like the victor’s crown of leaves at the early Olympics, so think trophies or medals.). Jewelry and gold medals don’t sound so bad. Think of one thing your mom or dad has taught you that has been helpful. For me, it is a love of reading. My mom was a first grade teacher which meant that we lived at the library in the summer.  The summer reading club was mandatory (That means you had to participate). I spent hours reading everything from Greek mythology to Nancy Drew.  It is a gift I cherish today and share with my kids. So, how about you? What thing has Mom or Dad taught you that turned out to be cool? Have they ever given you advice that was actually – good? Share it with us.

Fitness Tip: Sodas are yummy (Dr. Pepper is my fave.), but the ingredients aren’t the best for us. Sugar leaves you feeling too full for healthy food. Caffeine makes you hyper and all those bubbles may tickle your nose, but they aren’t great for growing strong bones. Soda also makes you thirsty – go figure. Try skipping the soda today and drink water instead. If you don’t like plain water, add a touch of lemonade for some flavor.

May the Lord bless you and your efforts. May His face shine upon you. May He shed His grace upon your ministry.
