“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”

Proverbs 18:10 (NIV)

What do you think of when you hear “strong tower”?

Shrek? Rapunzel?

Every castle has one. They’re all the rage. Why? Is it just an architectural fashion statement or a necessary hideaway for some cursed princess who needs a rescue? What can a strong tower offer?

A strong tower provides safety and refuge, perhaps from an enemy or even just bad weather. A strong tower also gives perspective. Its height allows you to see things you can’t at ground level.  So, why is God’s name considered a strong tower? Doesn’t Solomon mean God’s name is like a strong tower?

In Scripture, names reflect character. In fact, when we chose names for our children, we chose names representing character qualities we hoped they would develop as well as names of people with strong character: faith, warrior, Daniel, Lincoln. God’s name, here, a strong tower, reminds us, he is our refuge, our protection, our place of safety.

From what?

Fear, enemies, bad days, broken friendships, broken families, lots of things.

Solomon encourages us to not only get to the tower, but to run there. Note—standing outside the tower isn’t helpful. That’s like cowboys pounding on the closed doors of the fort with a pack of howling Indians on their heels. You need to get in.

So how do we enter? A plastic card we slide through a slot? A key?  A password?

John 14: 6 (NIV) says, “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’”

You have access to the Father through a relationship with his Son. Access is granted to all who ask. Come on in.
