Great Expectations

“Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, ‘What then is this child going to be?’ For the Lord’s hand was with him.” Luke 1:66 (NIV)

What are you going to be when you grow up?

You’ll hear this question many times until you finish school and get a “real” job. Then the question changes to “What do you do?”. We tend to size people up by what they do.

Do you want to be a fireman? How noble!

A trashman? Well, at least it’s honest work.

A doctor? Wow!

The verse above from Luke refers to the newborn John the Baptist. His parents are old—like old enough to be your great-grandparents. God has blessed them with a miracle child. An angelic message and a God-imposed silence on the father-to-be created unusual circumstances for John’s birth. When others mused over John’s future, their viewpoint was unusual as well. They seemed to expect something more from John. Why?

Look at the end of verse 66: “The Lord’s hand was with him.”

When God is present, God-things happen.

Supernatural.

Extraordinary.

So, what will you be when you grow up?

It depends. Ephesians 1:4 says: “For He (God) chose us( put your name here)…before the creation of the world…”

God has chosen you to be His.

Have you chosen Him to be yours?

His presence makes the difference.

“For the Lord’s hand was with _____________.”
