God With Skin On

Halloween. Glow sticks flash and plastic pumpkins swing, heavy with the weight of rustling candy. Nighttime transforms the kid in jeans and sneakers into a superhero or a fairy princess. Skeletons, football players, and dinosaurs roam the neighborhood. It’s a night to step out of the normal, everyday you and become extraordinary.

Did you know that God made a wardrobe change too?

Psalm 104:2a (NIV) says:

“He wraps himself in light as with a garment;”

God’s regular outfit, His normal, everyday get-up, is light. No flashy, sequined costume can compare with His glory. Yet, one day He traded His glory for skin, muscle, and bone, just like you and me. John 1: 14 (NIV) says:

“The Word (another name for Jesus) became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”

Why would God leave heaven and put on skin? Well, He sure wasn’t trick or treating. He was after something far greater than Snickers or Smarties:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”              John 3:16 (NIV)

Light and glory was traded for headaches and sore feet.

Perfection for punishment.

Divinity for death.

Why? To give you eternal life and to bring you to Himself.

Now that’s a treat worth unwrapping.
