Honey. We love the stuff! On biscuits, toast, or peanut butter sandwiches, we can’t get enough of it. King Solomon was big on it too. Check out this verse:

“Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Proverbs 16 :24 (NIV)

You know people like this. We love to be around them. Their honey-like words encourage us and make our day brighter.

Now, look at a contrast:

“Better to live in a desert than with a quarrelsome and ill-tempered wife.” Proverbs 21: 19 (NIV)

King Solomon had experience with both deserts and wives. Desert life is not ideal and neither is a crabby wife. Substitute anyone’s name in the wife spot and you get the same result. You’ll get as far away as possible from someone who quarrels and is in a bad mood all the time. Ick! Not honey-like.

So, where do you land? Are you a honey pot type whose words are sweet and pleasant or does your presence send your family and friends to the far side of the desert (or house)? Check yourself. If you are not sure, ask Mom and Dad. Pray about it. God specializes in turning bitter things sweet.

I’ve been sending people to the dessert lately. Thanks for this reminder!
