What’s in Your Closet?

T-shirts, Under-Armour, designer jeans, sneakers, or flip-flops, clothes tell you a lot about a person. Are they an athlete or a fashion diva? What is their favorite color? Is everything new or do they have a favorite pair of jeans that are older than their little sister?

Just as our closets reflects our likes, dislikes, and our personality, our spiritual closet reflects the state of our heart. Let’s look at Colossians 3: 12 (NIV):

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

Look at how Paul, author of Colossians, sets this up. If you are a Christ-follower, your heart condition is this: chosen by God, holy, and dearly loved. Your spiritual closet should reflect your heart condition and should have the following items: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

So what are you wearing these days? If you’re not sure, ask your parents and your close friends about your wardrobe. Are you sporting the Converse of Compassion or a knock off brand of no mercy? Are you wearing the cool tones of humility or the loud neon colors of pride? Are your Cool-Max socks of kindness keeping you blister-free or are you calloused from the cotton socks of put-downs? Is a spirit of gentleness among your accessories or are you accenting with a bad attitude? Talk to God about any wardrobe changes you might need to make. You’ll find His designs are a perfect fit.
