Can you keep a secret? Friendship and trust go together like chips and salsa. When someone confides in you, are you faithful not to tell? Proverbs 11:13 says:

“A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.” (NIV)

If you suffer from “loose lips”, watch out because gossip often returns to its source and that’s about as pleasant as dropping your tray in the school cafeteria. Not fun.

Are there times when you need to tell? Sure. If a friend is doing something illegal (like shoplifting, drugs, or alcohol) or if your friend is in danger (an abusive situation, cutting, or purging), you need to let a trusted adult know. Otherwise, treat others with the same respect and confidentiality (keeping private things private) that you want from them.
