Cross Training

One favorite place for a quick family getaway is the Wildcatter Ranch. Fishing, canoeing, horseback riding, skeet shooting, archery—this place has it all. A small herd of Longhorn cattle live on the property and you can feed them by hand. The cowboys know each one, both by how they look and by their personalities. Each Longhorn is called by name and the wranglers can tell you which ones are pushy and which will stand back and wait for their snack. These boys know their Longhorns. Jesus says the same thing is true of Himself:

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.” John 10:14, 15(NIV)

So, what kind of terms are you on with the Shepherd? He knows you. How well do you know Him? If things are a little shaky between you, try hanging out with Him more. Talk to Him, read His Word, or sing to Him. Try doing life together instead of only giving Him a minute or two of each day. He’s there for more than just feeding time and His love for you is, well, it’s wider than the spread of a Longhorn’s horns.
