Psalm 23 begins:

“The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want…” (NIV)

“I shall not want” means I have everything I need because God, my shepherd, provides for me. To be “in want” means that you need something. For a long time, when I read:

“The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want…”,  I thought it meant that God was my shepherd, but I didn’t want Him around. Too often, this has been true for me. I wanted to be in charge and to do things my way. I didn’t really want God because then I had to deal with His authority over me and I didn’t like that.

Have you ever felt that way? Let me encourage you to think like a sheep. Sheep know they need protection from predators and they also need things like food and water. Shepherds are equipped to handle all of the things that sheep can’t. It’s the same with us. Life throws a lot of things at us that we are not equipped to handle, but God, our shepherd, is ready and waiting. Trust Him and let Him be in charge. You shall not want—for anything. He is all you need.
