Confession and Repentance: 2 Steps for Treating Spiritual Breakouts

The eruption occurs in the night. A huge bump in the middle of the forehead. An angry Mt. Acne. What to do? Concealer? Trade a red knot for a flesh-colored one? Ugh! Even with concealer, it’s unsightly. My eyes go straight to the spot, and I’m sure everyone else’s do too. Oh, for clear skin.

The problem? A pore clogged with dirt, sweat, and who knows what. Once the pore is clean, the swelling will cease and the infection will clear.

It works for my skin, and it works for my spirit. Because, you see, I have spiritual breakouts too. Sin worms its way to the surface and pop! A pimple. A big ugly zit of pride, indulgence, or self-pity. What an eyesore.

God’s recommended treatment?

He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. (Proverbs 28:13 NIV)

No cover up here. Clean the pores and keep the breakouts to a minimum. Right? But the astringent of confession stings. I don’t like to admit my failures. Or my shortcomings. Or my pride. Like my sensitive skin, my sensitive spirit burns. Not with cleanser, but with shame. Yet, confession also relieves the stress in my shoulders. Playing God is hard and giving that spot back to Him is a relief, though my pride stings.

And the renouncing part? The part that requires me to transform, to change my state of mind for one that lines up with His? The humility gained by confession helps me take the next step, repentance. The moisturizer of a new way, a different choice, encourages me to do it His way next time.

So, how’s your spiritual complexion? Be proactive and keep your spirit clean. And if you do have a breakout, apply some confession and repentance.

You’ll be clear in no time.

Questions:

What is it like when you get a pimple?

How do you get rid of it? How long does it take?

Do you have an angry red pimple of a sin?

How can you get rid of it?
