5 Suggestions for a Spiritual Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning. I’ve heard cleanliness is next to godliness. If that’s the case, we’re in trouble. We live with a Labrador retriever. I have friends that spring clean. Deep clean. Baseboards, the top of the refrigerator, that kind of thing. As spring break approached and I thought, emphasis on thought, about cleaning, I came across this verse:

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”(John 13: 8b NIV)

Jesus is washing the disciples’ feet, but since we’re talking about cleaning, let’s look at some spiritual applications to consider. My spring cleaning list(s) look like this:

1)    Oil wood furniture and condition leather furniture.

Where is my spirit dry and parched?

2)    Clean the refrigerator and defrost the freezer.

What in my heart needs to be thawed? What needs to be thrown out?

3)    Wash rugs and curtains.

What’s gathered dust spiritually? Does something need a good shake?

4)    Deep cleaning: bookshelves, baseboards, the top of the refrigerator

What have I been putting off spiritually?

5)    Clean closets, drawers, and cabinets.

What is old or doesn’t fit?

What junk can I get rid of?

How can I make room for new things God has for me?

What messes need organizing?

What can I give away?

As we work through our spring cleaning, let’s invite God to do the same in our hearts.

Questions:

Look at the spiritual spring cleaning questions above.

Give each family member something to clean. Think about it from a spiritual angle while you work. Afterwards, do something fun and share your thoughts.
