Let’s Hear It for the Team

In the Trinity, not only do They work together as a team, They are Their own best cheerleaders. In the Trinity, each Member cheers on the other Two. They honor One Another. They love One Another. They talk each Other up. You’ll find no put-downs here, only positive thoughts. Check it out:

  • “For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does.” (John 5:20 NIV)
  • “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. (John 14:13)
  • “He [the Spirit] will bring glory to me by taking what is mine and making it known to you.” (John 16:14)

Paul points us toward positive thoughts in Philippians 4:8, “ . . . whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

God wants man’s relationships to reflect the special bond of the Trinity. That means focusing on what’s best in our relationships and remembering we’re on the same team.

Team Marriage.

Team Family.

Team Friendship.

When my focus turns to hurt feelings, to character flaws, and to my own desires, I get in trouble. Everything grows dark, and my defenses go up. The spirits of negativity and criticism show up for dinner, and I’m the main course.

To keep my focus on the previously mentioned Philippians 4 list, I start my day by listing five good qualities for the person in question. Some days they are repeats, but the focus is on positive thoughts, and that’s what I need.

The effect has been significant. Huge, in fact. When I see this person, their virtues shine, and I find myself giving grace more easily. Why? Because I’m looking for the good stuff, instead of the flaws.

And I’m finding it.

Relationships have been around forever, but God had the idea first. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit model how relationships should work—in mutual love, respect, and purpose. Release your inner cheerleader and talk up your team.
